So, how did a group of “underdogs” start one of the most successful and fast-growing pet food companies today? Obviously, there was no free training or help provided by the existing national pet food companies.

No one in our company had ever previously worked for a pet food company; nor had they ever worked with an
advertising company, computer software company, packaging company or any other field related to the manufacturing of pet food. For example, even the CEO and founder worked for a telephone company while distributing pet food out of his pump house. Now, there is one fact about this group of “green horns” that needs to be mentioned: each one is a
serious dog professional with expertise in showing, field trials and performance dogs. As a group of professionals, they also understand canine nutrition.

The founder has always believed that most manufacturers seemed more interested in profits and marketing spin than making the best possible diets. Everyone at Blackwood realizes the importance of focusing on quality, and that compromise is not an option. Blackwood adheres to the standards of honesty, quality and politeness without consideration to slick advertising techniques.

After establishing our goals and objectives, we started our formulations using a blank sheet of paper. After researching the industry for the latest scientific knowledge concerning manufacturing and cooking processes, along with ingredient and nutrient availability, we then applied proven engineering techniques with this new knowledge.

Tom Willard, Ph.D., a world renowned nutritionist, formulated the diets according to Blackwood’s criteria and standards. Ohio Pet Foods, Inc. was chosen as the contractor to build the diets due to their state of the art equipment and long experience in super premium diets. Blackwood kennel tests about 60 ton per formula before the name goes on the bag. We do not change our formulas every six months, subscribe to misleading advertising, or use exotic ingredients that have not been scientifically proven to benefit the pet.

One of the most important, but often overlooked aspects, is the cooking process of the carbohydrates. We are
fortunate to have located machinery that enables us to produce a “one of a kind” low temperature, slow, crock pot style of cooking. Our process improves the nutrient availability of the proteins and carbohydrates and eliminates heat damage to the vitamins and minerals. By having a higher cook rate of the carbohydrates (95%+, versus the industry standard of 83-86%), we increase digestibility and lessen the workload on the digestive system, thus lowering the stool volume. This equates to less clean up and reduces the cost of feeding your pets.

Serious attention was given to the small, but critical, details that go into engineering a “Super Premium Diet”. Details such as using sea salt for the added trace minerals, and distinctive Proteinate Minerals which are absorbed directly into the bloodstream by almost 100%. Selected proteinates at specific levels have been shown to increase the reproductive potential of dogs and possibly the number of pups born in the litter. Probiotics, or “friendly bacteria,” were added to increase digestibility, enhance the immune system, and to help eliminate digestive stress such as vomiting, diarrhea, and digestive flatulence.

We also included elevated levels of Omega 3 & Omega 6 fatty acids, which keep the skin and coat in super condition, as well as help with summer hot spots and other skin problems. Garlic and Brewers Yeast were also included for additional skin and coat conditioning. It is believed by many that garlic is excellent for the cardiovascular system and contains the properties of a minor flea repellent. To make life a little more pleasant for all of us, we added Yucca Schidigera Extract which helps to lower urine and stool odor, along with freshening the breath.

Things we DO NOT consider in any of our diets are: soy products, wheat products, chemical preservatives, artificial
colors, flavors, fillers, or by-product meals (which can contain feathers, beaks and feet). To ensure the incomparable quality and performance of a diet, we first built a solid foundation by incorporating A-1 choice quality sources of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals; plus the perfect balancing of overall diet.
